KARACHI: Former Test player Ramiz Raja believes that Pakistan team’s selection for the upcoming tour of England could have been better after Inzamamul Haq-led selection committee announced the 17-member squad.

Surprisingly, Iftikhar Ahmad was given a place in the touring squad, whereas the promising Babar Azam was named the skipper of Pakistan A.

On the other hand, Fawad Alam, who has been Pakistan’s best batsman in domestic cricket for last few years, was ignored despite registering impressive statistics and proving his fitness in the boot camp.

Additionally, several other players like Junaid Khan and Ehsan Adil — who both could have been a force with the new as well as the old ball in English conditions — missed out.

“The selection could have been better as Babar Azam is now an established player and should be in the national squad,” said Ramiz. “In my view, selectors should look at the overall performances and not just stats, because that would urge players to play selfishly.”
