Army chief says country ready to pay any price to turn 'dream' project into reality.

ISLAMABAD: Army chief General Raheel Sharif on Thursday said Pakistan is aware of the’ hostility ‘ faced by the multi-billion dollar ChinaPakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) in a statement alluding to India which has publicly opposed the project.

“We are aware of all hostility being perpetrated against the upcoming Pak-China Economic Corridor, which promises to transform the lives of people of Pakistan,” Gen Raheel said while addressing the Formation Commanders’ Conference at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi.

RAW is blatantly destabilising CPEC, says General Raheel

The daylong conference was attended by corps commanders, principal staff officers as well as all formation commanders, said a statement issued by the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR). The participants were given a comprehensive briefing on the prevailing internal and external security situation of the country. Participants also held exhaustive discussions on professional matters.

Speaking at the conference, the army chief made it clear that Pakistan was ready to pay any price to turn the long cherished CPEC dream’ into reality. His statement came at a time when reports suggested that India was increasingly upset over the OPEC. In what appears to be an attempt to compete with the CPEC, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi last week visited Tehran to sign a three-way deal to develop Chabahar port, which is just iookm from the Gwadar harbour.

Although, both Iran and Pakistan publicly dismissed suggestions that their respective ports could become a source of friction between the two countries, independent experts believe that India is building Chabahar port to undermine CPEC.

CPEC will see several govts before its completion: President Mamnoon

New Delhi already publicly objected to the CPEC on the grounds that the roads and communication links being built under the project are passing through the disputed region of Jammu and Kashmir.

Commitment of COAS to provide the security to CPEC project is very encouraging. There is no doubt, it will prove to be a game changer in the lives of people in selected areas of Pakistan particularly the Punjab province. So far the proposed Gilchistan (Gilgit, Chitral, Shina speaking occupied belt of Kohistan and Baltistan) province has been neglected in all respects. Not a single project has been identified for the area till date. The Minister In charge of CPEC has no room and a soft corner for the people of Gilchistan. The poor people of Hunza, Gilgit and the occupied Shina speaking belt of Kohistan will be the most sufferers. Majority of the smallest land holding size people of the said areas will be displaced for ever. Rates of compensation are so low that they will not be able to purchase a piece of land and construct a shelter in other parts of the country for a decent living. We are left with the so called promises of the federal Government. The federal Minister for KA & GB who remained Governor of GB as the representative of Viceroy of Pakistan always extends assurances and free advices for developing the GB and bringing it at par with other parts of Pakistan. The result is negative. We only believe in the promise of the COAS in resolving the long awaited issue of declaring the Gilchistan as the fifth constitutional province of Pakistan. If there is any serious issue, in declaring it as a province then give Gilchistan the status of an autonomous region on the pattern of Hongkong. Recommend
