BERLIN: German police have arrested three Pakistani suspects as 18 women have reported becoming victims of sexual assaults at a music festival, authorities said Tuesday.

The mostly young women said they were encircled and groped by groups of men on Saturday night in ways that recalled a spate of mob attacks at chaotic New Year’s festivities in Cologne.

Police said they were investigating whether the perpetrators also robbed the women in the latest attacks at a four-day open air music festival in the western city of Darmstadt.

Initially three women had filed charges, leading to the arrests of the three men, Pakistani asylum seekers aged 28 to 31, and another 15 women have come forward since.

Police said they were searching for another two or three men and said in a statement that “the women have reported that they appeared to be men from the South Asia region”.

Germany tightens rape law in wake of Cologne assaults

The Cologne attacks — committed in a crowd of mostly Arabic and North African men — appalled Germany and sharpened public concern about the arrival of over one million mostly asylum seekers last year, most from the Middle East.

In the inflamed debate, far-right groups railed against “sex jihadists” and “rapefugees”.

These are dole migrants who have little or no education. This is only to be expected. Germany thinks these people will help boost the economy !Recommend

@Prada what does little or no education have to do with sexual assaults ? Its a crime which can be committed by anyone of any sphere of society. Germany accepted Syrians, not Pakistanis. There is a huge difference between refugees fleeing war and migrants who come illegally for economic benefits. I hope government of Pakistan never accepts them back. They deserve to face jail time.Recommend

We need to educate our people to respect the culture of different countries. Just because women dress differently, or allow women more freedom or have a different religion does not give us a license to do assault their women. When we have forced kidnappings and marriages of minority women we should not surprised this happens. Recommend

I just want to ask one thing, how did they prove those men actually groped these women? Or did innocent until proven guilty has become a thing of the past? It explicitly mentions they “arrested” those men. So how exactly did they prove them guilty? Words of few against other?

I don’t doubt these women but its just a scary thought. I mean if this is how we start working, then what is stopping a person to ruin someone’s life (someone they don’t like) by simply claiming “sexual assault”? Once again, I’m not saying I doubt these women. But I also don’t believe words of one against another are “proof of guilty”. Recommend

Almost all young girls and boys in Germany carry smart phone with camera in their hand or pocket which can capture the perpetrator of such crime. Are you still in 19th century? Germany have video cameras on public places, one good consequence of terrorism. Recommend

Because Germany doesn’t require the sexual harassment victim to produce four witnesses to the crime to authenticate her claims. Her word alone is enough to arrest them. It’s the job of the courts to prove them innocent. Recommend

How do they prove that they were being groped.
When it is one woman , there is room for doubt. When it is 18 women and problem is a sexually repressed culture then there is very little extra proof needed.

Thank God, the Germans press knows not to call these low life Pakistanis ‘south asian’, unlike those lefty nutjobs in UK. All ‘south asian’ should unite and declare pakistanis as middle eastern. In west, especially north America, Pakistanis try to pass themselves off as Indians among the population. They also try to tell Indians, things like ‘we are all same’ blah blah. I alway tell them we are not same, we are Indians and you are Pakistanis and lets keep it that way.Recommend

@IndianDude: It defies logic why any Pakistani would pass themselves off as an Indian, of all people ??! I guess you were eavesdropping on what transpired in every case, like a typical Indian is want to do ? Many Pakistanis could not even pass as Indians, in their mannerisms and facial structure, so I highly doubt your remark !Recommend

With the exception of Pashtuns all Pakistanis are basically Indian Muslims. I have friends from Karachi, Lahore and Sialkot and they all look very Indian to me. In the GCC all South Asians are called al Hindi. Recommend

Not just Pashtuns, but people from Balochistan, Hazara, Gilgit, etc look a lot different from your average Indian. And with the successive waves of Afghans coming into the country over the last 30+ years, their racial stock to some degree has blended with the host peoples. Depending on the age of your friends, they may be more the exception than the rule.Recommend

@Rollin & Trollin: Well, Pakistanis would love to pass off as success stories like Indians, but turns out they are quite unsuccessful. Plus, Pakistanis treat women like garbage; just see the assaults in Britain by grooming gangs, and would like to make it seem as if whole of South Asia is the same.. When attacks against women happen in India, there is lot of outrage and soul searching. In Pakistan, it is daily affair not even worth reporting – part of culture!Recommend

@maraba3 : no Pakistanis could never pass off as Indians, even if they try to, because of the smell and hygiene problems with Indians. It’s no contest. No matter how much Indians try to mimic and ape westerners, they are never treated equal. Atleast we Pakistanis stand for what ever we are, good or bad, and don’t pass off as western slaves, and we pay the price for it, but take it on the chin. By the way wasn’t it an Indian student denied admission to Germany because of “rape problem in your country”?Recommend

It is really sad that whenever a problem is reported in a country in Europe or the USA, a Pakistani name comes up. This seems to be true whether it be America, UK, Germany or Italy. This causes enormous damage to our country’s image internationally. Previously, I used to believe that some of our problems domestically are due to our problems with India and their interference in our affairs. But that cannot explain the behaviour of our citizens in all the other countries in the world. We need to fix our education system.Recommend

What international image? Pakistan deserves its reputation.
On contrary, it is Indians and other south asians who are suffering due to Pakistanis. As many in west can’t differentiate, specially when pakistanis are actively hoodwink the locals by claiming Indians or ‘south asians’.
