Udta Punjab 'grounded' by Indian censor board

Turns out the Indian and Pakistani censor boards are cousins after all

It turns out that India's censor board isn't very different from Pakistan's when it comes to moral policing. The Shahid Kapoor and Alia Bhatt starrer Udta Punjab is in trouble with the censor board due to the film's explicit content, and possibly because of its negative depiction of Punjab.

Director Abhishek Chaubay's team has stated that the CBFC (Censor Board for Film Certification) has not yet given a certificate to the movie and is demanding that most of the cuss words be edited out, reports Indian Express.

Indian Express reports a member of the production team as saying, “The film is based on the drug problem in Punjab, the character played by Shahid Kapoor, that of a musician, is liberal with expletives. Cutting those out will take away from the narrative.”



CBFC's sudden concerns with the film's content has raised many questions because the trailer was faced with zero contentions. NDTV reports that some sources believe the decision is linked to political reasons in the state that will hold elections next year.

Many filmmakers are demanding that the Censor board quit moral policing, and reports have been submitted to counter the issue.
