QUETTA: A Quetta-based accountability court on Thursday granted 14-day remand of Balochistan’s former finance adviser to chief minister Mir Khalid Langove to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

Langove was rounded up by the anti-corruption watchdog on Wednesday over "corruption charges" after his bail plea had been dismissed by the Balochistan High Court (BHC).

The ex-finance adviser is allegedly involved in the Mushtaq Raisani scandal, in which investigators of the top graft-buster found more than Rs5 million in cash stashed in cartons at a bakery in Quetta last week.

Raisani, the then Balochistan finance secretary, was also arrested from his office on May 6 after NAB officials seized about Rs700 million in cash and jewellery from his residence. A day after his arrest, an accountability court had sent him on a 14-day remand in NAB’s custody.

Three more people identified as Sohail Majeed, Asad Shah and Nadeem Iqbal were later arrested on information divulged by the suspect accused of misappropriating millions of government funds.

As a result of the scandal, former CM Dr Abdul Malik Baloch said the party leadership had asked Langove to resign, prompting him to do so, adding that the procedures are followed in a legal way.

He said since the day the corruption incident had come to fore, he had been present with his colleagues in the house. “The opposition was also making false statements regarding Reko Diq project as he had made no dealings on it and the matter of the mega project is sub-judice.”
