Preventing erosion : Govt planning bunds on Indus River

DG KHAN: The National Planning Commission has approved the construction of two bunds on the River Indus, Member of National Assembly Sardar Owais Ahmad Khan Laghari said at a union council meeting on Sunday. He explained that the river had been causing the western bank to wear rapidly. He said if action wasn’t taken on priority, thousands of acres of land and the people living there would be affected by the erosion. The construction of bunds on the bank would cost an estimated Rs400 million, the lawmaker said. Minister Ahsan Iqbal said work on the projects would begin as soon as monsoon ended. According to the Irrigation Department, a bund could be between 4,000 and 6,000 feet long. They will save several lives and arable land, they said.
