While it has been almost a year since rumours were spread about WhatsApp launching a video calling feature, Fonearena recently reported that some Android users started getting the ‘Video call’ option on WhatsApp’s beta v2.16.80, that was available on the Google Play Store.
People using the aforementioned version of the app got two options while making a call on WhatsApp, one for regular audio call and another for video call. Although the feature has not yet been activated, some users claimed that they were able to make the video calls.

However, WhatsApp quickly posted another version of the app (v2.16.81) that removed the video call option.
Apparently, the feature needs to be activated from server side and likely to happen soon.
Last year when it introduced the voice call feature for android devices, WhatsApp initially allowed select users access to the feature in the weeks leading up to a broader launch.
Although it’s been over a year since WhatsApp users have been able to place audio calls, a video calling feature would pose a bigger threat other video calling apps like Skype, FaceTime, Hangouts and Facebook Messenger. WhatsApp currently has more than 1 billion users.
