LAHORE: Lahore High Court on Monday discharged contempt of court proceedings against Federal Ombudsperson for Protection against Harassment of Women at Workplaces Yasmin Abbasi after she tendered an unconditional apology during in-camera proceedings.

In her written apology submitted to Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, the ombudsperson said she regretted her actions in the matter. Justice Shah observed that higher courts had always shown restraint in such matters. He accepted the apology and discharged the contempt proceedings against her.

Earlier, the ombudsperson arrived at Justice Shah’s chamber accompanied by Attorney General of Pakistan Ashtar Ausaf Ali and Islamabad IG Tariq Masood Yasin. Pakistan Bar Council member Azam Nazir Tarar and Lahore High Court Bar Association president Rana Zia Abdul Rehman attended the in-camera session as amici curiae (friends of court).

The court had initiated contempt proceedings and issued non-bailable warrants for the ombudsperson for her failure to comply with court orders and attend the hearing of a case.
