LAHORE: The Awami Workers Party on Sunday elected its new committee for Lahore at the party’s second district congress. AWP president Abid Hassan Minto, Punjab president Aasim Sajjad Akhtar and general secretary Farooq Tariq attended the event. In their remarks, the AWP leaders said the party’s commitment to democratic politics was reflected in internal democracy within its various structures. In his keynote address, Minto urged the new committee to strengthen the party organisation and to mobilise the public in support of its manifesto. He said the party was opposed to exploitation based on economic class, gender and race. He said the party stood for a society where a balance could be struck between use of natural resources for public welfare and the preservation of these resources for future generations. He urged the new committee to devise workable strategies for attaining these objectives. He also stressed the need for the party’s activists to engage with social movements of the working people.
