"Taliban cannot attack US targets"

RAWALPINDI: Pakistan’s Army Spokesman Major General Athar Abbas said that the Taliban’s capability to attack overseas targets in the US and elsewhere has been destroyed.

In a telephone interview from Rawalpindi, the Director General of ISPR said that the Taliban only have claims left to make.

The attempt to wreak havoc in Times Square came as TTP Chief Hakimullah Mehsud resurfaced in videos and vowed to attack US cities.

US and Pakistani officials have rejected out of hand a claim of responsibility for the New York plot posted by Mehsud's group on YouTube.

But sources said that investigators have grown more cautious as details are emerging in Faisal Shahzad's case.

Fahad Ahmed. | 14 years ago | Reply As far as TTP(Tehreek e Taliban of Pakistan) is concerned, they're too many different groups and they are not working under Afghan Taliban. And there's no doubt in it that U.S is allowing Indian weaponry flow to TTP. India has opened 'too many' consulates in Afghanistan(of-course with the approval & support of U.S) many of which are near the Afghanistan's region bordering with Pakistan. Most of them serve as 'intelligence bases' against Pakistan. In many anti-TTP operations by Pakistan Army, Indian weaponry has been found. But on the other hand, the same U.S is blaming Pakistan for incidents resulting from America's own policy-flaws & mistakes. This, for sure, is NOT going to work!

Fahad Ahmed. | 14 years ago | Reply U.S must stop blaming Pakistan. Pakistan Army has achieved brilliant success in Swat & other areas, which the US couldn't do in Afghanistan in 10 years! So it's better for the US to concentrate more on itself, and because it is obvious that US & NATO have failed to control the situation in Afghanistan(they actually have worsened it) and since they themselves have admitted that peace-talks is the only proper permanent-solution left for Afghanistan, they must shift the weight to peace-talks with the Afghan Taliban. Avoiding this only solution, is only going to increase problems for U.S & allies and will block the option of a face-saving pull-out from Afghanistan! U.S citizens need to understand that jihad in Afghanistan is only nourishing because of the presence of occupation-forces. As soon as the occupation forces leave, the cause of jihad against U.S will start dying. Otherwise, the situation will only worsen.

Yasir Qadeer | 14 years ago | Reply I agree with this statement because the success of military operation in NWFP and the effort by USA in Afghanistan have left TTP in doldrums. They do not have the capability to launch a major attack or an offensive now.
