A seasoned political activist of the National Party was killed in a drive-by shooting in the strife-torn district of Mastung on Saturday.

Mir Ghulam Hassan Sarparah, a one-time ex-district nazim, was gunned down when he was visiting his ancestral estate in the Girdap area of Mastung, an official of the Balochistan Levies said.

Two men riding a motorcycle drove up close to Sarparah, shot him and fled, he said. Rescue workers and personnel of security forces moved the body to the District Headquarters Hospital for legal formalities.

Doctors in the hospital confirmed that Sarparah received multiple bullet wounds in the head and chest. A spokesman for the National Party, Jan Buledi, condemned the murder, acknowledging that Mir Ghulam Hassan Sarparah had rendered great services to the people of Mastung district and Balochistan.

Buledi called upon the provincial government to bring the perpetrators of the heinous crime to justice.
