In the film — which revolves around substance abuse in the Indian state of Punjab — Shahid will be authenticating the effects of drug and alcohol addiction. In real life, however, the 35-year-old refrains from consuming either of the substances due to his religious beliefs. “Through Tommy, I have explored a new space in my journey as an actor,” Shahid said, in a statement. “I am enjoying this phase of my career, wherein I am able to play a varied set of characters that are all extremely interesting,” he added.

Many of the actor’s fellow Bollywood celebrities have been appreciating his work in the new film. Udta Punjab also stars Alia Bhatt as a migrant Bihari labourer, Kareena Kapoor as a doctor fighting against illegal drug transport and Diljit Dosanjh as a police officer. It highlights the issue of rampant substance abuse amongst the youth and is slated for release on June 17.
