Russia boosting ties with Pakistan: Putin

President Putin conveyed good wishes for the leadership and the people of Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Russia’s President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday said his country was actively developing multifaceted relations with Pakistan, particularly in the fields of trade and counter-terrorism.

He made these remarks in a meeting with Pakistan’s Ambassador in Russia Qazi Khalilullah, who presented his letter of credence to the Russian president
in Moscow.

A statement issued by the Pakistani embassy in Moscow said Qazi conveyed greetings from the president, prime minister and the people of Pakistan to the Russian president

In his remarks, President Putin conveyed good wishes for the leadership and the people of Pakistan.

Pakistan and Russia usher in new era of cooperation

He expressed satisfaction at the level of cooperation between the two countries in the United Nations, which was based on a shared commitment to international law and convergence of positions on many key global and regional issues.

Russian Govt did not hold them for distrust but, it was the hotel bill that they believe the phone company should have paid. @joey: India already has a trade deficit of $65 billion with China. That's mostly ONEWAY trade benefiting China. Indian contract with Russia about sharing Sukhoi Jet Technology is in doldrums already, read the current news. Iran don't want extend anymore favors to India in Chahbar port and New charges make that port useless for India compare to little profit it can generate after driving the trucks thousands of mile in mountain terrain.

It can - and has -swatted Islamofascism. Like India, it does not believe in the politics of expediency as you are used to. India has no problem with Russia's friendship with you as both Russia and India are mature entities, but do not expect that you will ever get the better of India with any power. Remind yourself that 1. Russia helped India to create the new nation of Bangladesh, 2. The nation with whom you joined in CENTO, Baghdad Pact and SEATO, the US of A , dumped you and is today a big suitor of India. And, keep reminding yourself of that before getting oversmart for your own good.

Why exactly does Russia need Pakistan for oil trade? It can certainly sell oil to China without going through Pakistan. Why would Russia depend on Pakistan for improving ties with central Asian republics - many whom were part of USSR? What cultural ties does Pakistan share with Uzbekistan or Turkmenistan?

curious2 | 8 years ago | Reply Russia is essentially run by the Mafia and the combo of low oil prices and sanctions has put them in a difficult situation. They are running out of hard currency and their recent foreign policy has required them to spend a disproportionate amt of their funds on upgrading an aging military. If Pakistan had surplus cash they could likely buy any military hardware they wanted from Russia - but the operative word is "cash". Same goes for oil/gas - you just need cash. Also - Russia wants in on the "no bid" contracts being awarded to China - that's fertile ground for kickbacks which the Mafia specializes in.

Ashok | 8 years ago | Reply India is for sure trading more with US and Europe than in the past. That does not mean Russian trade with India got any less in the recent past. Indian trade with Russia is many times over what Pakistan can trade even if it decides to unilaterally trade with it. I don't think Russia, which by the way is India's all weather friend since decades, will ever give up India and side with Pakistan. It just does not make sense to do so - economically, or strategically. India will have great relationship with all countries except Pakistan. Even China will be a friendly country. Just wait and watch.

This is defined in international relations as a sovereign state with the ability to exert its influence globally. We can count the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council the US, China, France, Russia, the UK as Great Powers.They can influence global events because of their Security Council veto, but also because of their wealth and military power so please get a permanent membership first,After these five come two other states that are influential globally economically, but not militarily, and they are Germany and Japan these are smaller states that are wealthy but not particularly influential, like Spain, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Taiwan, Italy, Chile, Australia, the Nordic nations and so on. secondly, China which is far progressive and has huge economy won't justified to become a super power, and will china ever let this happen??? in ur dreams, a failed state like India having so many issues is dreaming to become a super power. do u really analyse things or just blinded by the love for ur country. pathetic.

You are right, India an Russia are looking for new allies for "expanding" but not at the cost of each other. Pakistan's relations with China is strong only because of your aim against India, and ME because of religion. But India's is totally because of economy including China($70 billion trade per year) which is more stronger than any religion can ever be. Pakistan is a part in all China, Russia, Us's equation but never a solution.

Sunil | 8 years ago | Reply India has extensive defense ties with Russia, the deals they are offering are trade and cultural to Pakistan. Even if they offer more, India is setting up it's own defence industries that means less reliance on importing defence equipment. Long term India will be miles a head and no doubt be a super power.

India new friends are mostly U.S. old and permanent friends. In retaliation her old friends are contacting Pak for stronger ties than before. Both India and Pak had wrong friends that didn't suite their culture and history. Russia need Pak for fuel trade and historic cultural ties that Pak had with Muslim republics there. Pak new friends have sizable Muslim population crucial for need base products market. India is pulling back from its old allies to please new ones. India has put its mutual projects with old friends on hold now; from trade and technology to fuel and loan assistance. Russia, China, EU, Australia, Japan, U.S.and ME all need PAk newly acquired expertise in handling violence from extremism. Pak has lots of products to offer to Russian Republics. Afgh & India will be in a tight spot. They can't say no to Russia for it's trade and commerce rout through it. Taliban will be happy to see reduced U.S. influence in the area. Russia don't produce and dump goods like China or India.

Pakistan had very good ties with Russia which has good relations with china as well. USA-India-Israel and Russia-Pakistan-China was the equation but later Pakistan foreign policy shifted towards US which was a blunder. sorry but ur analysis is childish. if u have good ties with one doesn't meant u r breaking up ur existing.
