KARACHI:

An under-trial prisoner was rearrested on Sunday hours after he escaped from Civil Hospital, Karachi.

The suspect, Adil, was under guarded treatment at the hospital’s ward-5 after he fell ill.

SP Shehla Qureshi said the accused was arrested by Gulshan-e-Iqbal police last year in a robbery case and was imprisoned at District Jail Malir during the course of trial.

“He was brought to the hospital over a health issue a couple of days ago and was under police custody,” said the SP. She explained that the accused escaped from the bathroom window after the policemen guarding him left him unattended. The policemen, Abdul Hadi and Waheed, were later suspended for negligence and a departmental inquiry has been initiated against them, she informed.

The police managed to nab the runaway accused during a raid in Mehmoodabad. Qureshi said the police first conducted raid at his residence in Gulshan-e-Iqbal and then another at his in-laws’ residence in Mehmoodabad where they got hold of him.
