Jal front man Goher Mumtaz and wife Anum Ahmed together make one of the most sought-after couples of the Pakistani entertainment industry. Although his music has been more on the slower side, Goher’s acting endeavours have proved to be a major lifeline for his career. Anum too has now decided to join her better half on screen and is set making her acting debut, romancing Goher in the upcoming drama serial, Kathputli.

Talking to The Express Tribune, Anum said she is playing a headstrong girl in the drama who can do anything to get what she wants in life. “I never intended to act in the first place. Acting was never a passion for her until now as she says, “I never intended to act. I had been offered projects such as Bin Roye and Kambakht when I was studying but I turned them down because I had not considered making a career in acting. I had different priorities at the time.” However, it seems it all fell in place with Kathputli. “Fahim Burney is the director. The content, cast, production team are all top-of-the-line.”

Jal to release new single

Goher himself had made his acting debut with a Fahim Burney directorial. “It was Tanhai in 2012. He is great to work with and I learnt a lot from him,” Goher chimed in. “We didn’t want it [their screen appearance] to be tacky. We were waiting for a good project.”

Kathputli revolves around the couple and how misunderstandings take root in their relationship. “There are some very interesting scenes and we’ve tried to deliver,” he said.

Shrugging off questions that suggest she got into acting all because of her significant other, Anum said, “I was offered roles way before we were engaged and at the end of the day it’s me acting ... it doesn’t matter how one gets there.” With another project in the pipeline, Anum intends on experimenting with characters and wants to work with veterans such as Bushra Ansari and Samina Peerzada.

Currently pursuing a diploma in film-making, Anum has decided that acting will now remain her first priority. “I will be choosy with my roles because when you’re on TV all the time, people get sick of you.”

Goher, on the other hand, is not one for hyperboles. “I’m not saying it’s a groundbreaking show or it will change societal perceptions but the plot is very interesting.” Set to air in a month, the drama also stars Sanam Chaudhry and Farhan Malhi.
