ISLAMABAD: A male nurse at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) in Islamabad has been booked for trying to sexually assault a mentally challenged patient.

A 22-year-old woman with multiple health problems was admitted to the Pims’ Surgical ICU, where Krishan Kumar allegedly attempted to rape her around 2:00am on Sunday, Dr Javed Akram, vice chancellor of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University (SZABMU), said on Monday. The university manages the medical institution.

“In order to curb such incidents in the future, no male nurse will be allowed to attend female patients in the hospital,” he announced.

The victim has been under treatment for an acute chest infection, Akram told The Express Tribune.

The hospital administration has registered an FIR against Kumar with the Karachi Company police Station on the complaint of the victim’s father. Police have been unable to arrest Kumar, who was suspended after the hospital received the complaint.

Moreover, Capital Administration and Development Divison (CADD) Minister Dr Tariq Fazl Chaudhry has constituted a committee comprising three senior medical professors and headed by SABMU Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr Abid Farooqi to probe the incident.
