Helping wildlife beat the heat

Letter April 10, 2016
Quality of care and importance should also be given to the animals in the Karachi Zoo and other zoos

KARACHI: In the previous months, there were several court hearings regarding safety precautions to be taken in order to beat the expected heatwave coming to Karachi. However, I want to draw attention towards the notion that the quality of care and importance being given to human beings must also be given to the animals in the Karachi Zoo and other zoos.

During heatwaves, animals may need to seek water outside their normal zones and they can be assisted by providing additional water sources scattered about their habitats. To avoid dehydration among animals, a dosage of glucose and medicines must be given under veterinary supervision. Pools inside the enclosures also ensure sufficient water. Leaving water bowls filled with rocks and sticks outside in shady protected areas will give access to all types of animals to be entertained and be able to climb back to their places.

Shades must be placed over animal cages and water must be sprayed at regular intervals to protect animals from the heat. Zoos in Karachi have always been a famous spot for attracting visitors, especially children. To maintain the zoo’s utility, the municipalities working in Karachi must make arrangements for zoo animals for the summer so they can continue to attract onlookers and survive the hazardous temperatures.
