Road woes

Letter April 07, 2016
The situation on Kahuta turn and the Lai Bridge on GT Road in Rawalpindi is creating great ordeal for commuters

RAWALPINDI: How would it feel driving three kilometres in 45 minutes or more, twice a day? This situation exists between the Kahuta turn and the Lai Bridge on GT Road in Rawalpindi. Living in DHA and commuting to the city every day, is an ordeal I face. Located on this stretch of road are schools, universities, and commercial centres. Some kind of construction work has been going on for the past six months, without an end in sight. Even Wapda, which has presumably been paid to, relocate its poles on the said piece of road, has not done its job. The Punjab government follows lopsided policies fervently where it wants to but ignores where attention must be paid urgently. The same is the case on a similar stretch on Multan Road in Lahore, from Thokar Niazbeg, to the Shahpur Road turn, where permanent traffic disorder prevails. This stretch of road, too, needs adding at least one lane on the left side of the road facing down country. The chief minister of Punjab generally takes quick decisions and ensures their execution, but his priorities are not evenhanded. He gives more importance to upscale areas and less importance to where the commoners move about. Keep in mind that the two three-kilometre road stretches mentioned, are the main entry and exit points of two major cities of Punjab, Lahore and Rawalpindi.
