The wife of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Tuesday called for the return of offshore wealth to Pakistan in a bid to clear the Sharif name.

"Only way to clear Sharif name is to keep minimum, simplify life drastically, return all foreign and local wealth to the nation ie Jinnah," Tehmina Durrani said in a series of tweets.

Dismissing all allegations against herself as baseless, Tehmina said, "I am shocked at the news of owning off shore companies. I neither have had any property nor money abroad ever."

She added that proof of her name on any off shore company or property should be put in front of everyone and admitted feeling embarrassed to be included in the "maha rich league".

Tehmina also clarified that she had been married to Shahbaz Sharif for 14 years but her in-laws had never met her, sarcastically adding that a media report had portrayed them as "one big happy offshore family".

She added that she only had a house in Lahore from her husband and other than that she did not own anything in Pakistan or abroad.

The Punjab CM's wife also reiterated that national wealth should be returned to the country. "I said two years ago that for democratic survival, leaders have to be upfront and return Pakistan wealth."

'Panama leaks have made no allegations of wrongdoing against Sharif family'

Further, she stated that she had not inherited anything from her parents, recalling the time she had been disowned by them in 1991 for writing her book My Feudal Lord, an account of her traumatic marriage to former Punjab governor Ghulam Mustafa Khar.

Tehmina was also of the opinion that even if offshore accounts were legal, for her they were unethical, adding that the latter was worse for her.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif ordered on Tuesday a judicial investigation into the Panama Papers allegations of the Sharif family’s ownership of offshore companies and assets.

In a rare televised address to the nation, the premier said a judicial commission (JC) headed by a former judge would investigate his family for any wrongdoing.

A massive leak of 11.5 million tax documents of a Panamanian law firm has exposed the secret offshore dealings of world leaders and celebrities.

Among those named are three of PM Nawaz’s four children with records showing they own real estate in London through offshore companies administered by Mossack Fonseca. None of the businesses mentioned are owned or run by the premier himself.

hameed shaheen | 8 years ago | Reply in fact i was somewhat stunned to have a scent of Tehmina Durrani Sahiba; PM says Sharif family owes nothing vis-a-vis panama disclosure, but she argues return of wealth from abroad. or from domestic treasure.
Imran Qadri | 8 years ago | Reply How come she only marries filthy rich who are in power or were in power. Her previous husband was top political person of his time and her current husband too is top political personality of his province. Both are filthy rich. She could have married a middle class person instead if she hated wealthy and wealth so much?
