MA Jinnah Road remained closed for traffic as the protests being held in favour of the convicted murderer of Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer, Mumtaz Qadri, continued for the third consecutive day in the metropolis.
Traffic remained disturbed at the city’s main thoroughfare as well as the major arteries linked to it, according to a traffic police official.
Qadri, an Elite Force official in Taseer’s security protocol gunned down the then governor on January 4, 2011, in Islamabad’s Kohsar Market. Qadri, the self-confessed killer, was executed at Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi last month.
The protest, under the umbrella of Ittehad-e-Ahle Sunnat, an alliance of several parties representing the Barelvi school of thought, was staged at Numaish Chowrangi. The series of protests started at the Chehlum of Qadri. The alliance comprises the Jamiat Ulema-e-Pakistan (Noorani), Pakistan Sunni Tehreek, Jamaat-e-Ahle Sunnat, Sunni Alliance, Sunni Ittehad Council and others.
