PARIS: Tuesday's attacks in Brussels that killed at least 26 people struck at "the whole of Europe", French President Francois Hollande said.

"Through the attacks in Brussels, the whole of Europe has been hit," Hollande said in a statement, urging the continent to take "vital steps in the face of the seriousness of the threat.

"France which was itself attacked in January and November last year is fully engaged in that. France will implacably continue the fight against terrorism both on the international level and at home."

Attacks on Brussels airport, metro station kill at least 26

The November 13 attacks in Paris claimed 130 lives 10 months after attacks on the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo and a Jewish supermarket left 17 dead.

French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve earlier announced that Paris was deploying 1,600 additional police to border crossings and air, sea and rail infrastructure after the Brussels attacks.

vcbhutani | 8 years ago | Reply The West as well as the rest of the world has been treating terrorism as a problem of this country or that. At the very least, the attack in Brussels should elicit at least a European if not a world response. People and governments of all countries should understand that the problem of terrorism shall not be tackled by one country or by a group of countries but by all countries coming together and confronting terrorism whenever and wherever it raises its head. Especially, we should expect that Western countries shall eventually have reaction against non-white immigrants, regardless of the contribution they may have made to those countries or how long they may have lived in the West. The countries from which terrorists come will have to take special measures to ensure that their nationals do not launch terrorist attacks in their host countries, otherwise the reaction shall be ugly. President Hollande has said the right thing in calling the attack in Brussels at least an attack on all Europe. In fact it is an attack on all civilizations and cultures to which terrorists are opposed and should elicit response also from President Obama and other world leaders. Only a world response shall defeat an outfit like IS, which USA is still treating with kid gloves. Let us hope Brussels may be a turning point. V. C. Bhutani, Delhi, 22 Mar 2016, 1740 IST
