PESHAWAR: The third phase of expanding the traffic warden system will be launched soon. “At least 100 more policemen have already been selected [to be enrolled as wardens],” said SSP Traffic Sadiq Baloch while talking to the media at Traffic Police Headquarters in the city on Monday.

He said IGP Nasir Khan Durrani set a limit of 180 days in which the learner’s permit can stay valid. Those who have an old driving licence, army-issued license or a licence from any foreign country would be issued another one immediately. “[These policies] are strictly observed,” Baloch added.

“In a meeting attended by the IGP and chief secretary with Chief Minister Khattak, it was decided to give the power of issuing commercial licences to the transport department and as per a standing order by IGP, police would not issue any commercial licences but would be responsible for issuing non-commercial licences,” said Baloch. He added at least 19 250cc bikes had been imported from Japan and will be handed over to the traffic wardens next week.

The slogan “say no to corruption” would be written on each permit in order to create awareness among the general public against corruption, he said.
