KARACHI:

A sessions court sentenced on Saturday a policeman and his accomplice to death, after convicting them of murdering two people more than a decade ago over a petty dispute.

The district West and sessions judge, Khadim Hussain Tunio, awarded capital punishment to Taj Muhammad, a police constable, and his accomplice, Abdul Baseer. The two men were found guilty of murdering their neighbours, Hafiz Nisar, who was a policeman, and Rahimullah. According to the prosecution, the accused and their absconding accomplice, Shafiq, gunned down their neighbours over a dispute in Pirabad in January 2002.

The judge observed that in light of the evidences and testimonies of the witnesses, the case against the accused proved beyond shadow of doubt, therefore, they have been convicted of the offence. The judge also ordered the accused to pay a fine of Rs100,000 each to the legal heirs of the deceased. As the accused were on bail, they were taken into custody after the verdict.

The capital punishment is, however, subjected to be confirmed by the high court as required in the criminal procedure code.
