KARACHI: Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) registered a win against Balochistan 2-0 in the Rangers Aman Football Tournament at the People’s Stadium on Friday.

The Division B team took the lead in the 32nd minute of the match on a penalty which was scored by defender Aurangzeb Yar Mohammad while striker Muhammad Tahir sealed the win in the 61st minute.

SSGC are using their Karachi-based players for the tournament, but their key midfielder Saadullah is not participating in the event.

Meanwhile, Swat also defeated Sindh Police 4-3 on penalties.

The teams played out a goalless first half before Sindh Police’s Mohammad Wasim scored the opener in the 82nd minute. But despite the late opener, an equaliser followed as Swat’s Muhammad Ayaz levelled five minutes later.

According to the organiser, Ranger’s Major Hisam Qazi, the tournament features teams from all over the country and believes that the knockout format will be more entertaining.

Football turmoil — sport the only victim

Pakistan Premier Football League teams had raised concerns over the format but Qazi said that it would have been difficult to hold a tournament for more than 40 days.

“The tournament is going smoothly,” Qazi told The Express Tribune. “We tried to include everyone from the football community. This is the biggest football tournament we’ve held so far.”
