RAWALPINDI:

A gang of six robbers stormed into a branch of a private bank at Gulshan Dadan Khan on Murree Road and made off Rs1.8 million. They also injured a security guard.

The injured guard, Tanveer, was rushed to Holy Family Hospital for medical treatment.

RPO Wisal Fakhar Sultan Raja suspended New Town SHO Sub Inspector Altaf Gohar over the weak security arrangements in his jurisdiction, which led to the robbery.

Robbers carrying 9mm pistols arrived outside the bank branch in Shamasabad in broad daylight and tried to enter the bank, sources said.

Security tried to stop them, but the robbers injured a security guard by striking his head with a pistol butt. The robbers then entered the bank and held the staff and customers hostage at gunpoint, the police said. They later fled without any hindrance.

CPO Israr Ahmed Khan Abbasi was at the crime scene later in the day. “Robbers looted Rs1.8 million at gunpoint and injured a security guard for attempting to stop them. We will soon arrest the robbers and will recover the stolen money,” he said.

Police registered a case against the robbers on the complaint of the branch manager and started investigations. The police are also examining CCTV footage from the bank.

The RPO has directed the CPO to form raiding parties to arrest robbers.
