JHELUM:

The Punjab government has constituted a committee to investigate the alleged use of spurious mosquito spray at a school in Jhelum after which several school girls were hospitalised on Saturday.

Around 40 girls were rushed to Jhelum District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital after fear and panic spread at the school. The hospital said no student had any respiratory problem. They all were discharged after check-up.

The school administration said a student threw up due to smoke emitting from a garbage dump nearby after which other students panicked, mistaking the smoke for a mosquito spray.

Punjab Education Minister Rana Mashhood, who visited the school on Saturday, denied reports of anti-dengue spray at the school.

Addressing the media at the DCO office, he said anti-dengue fumigation has not been carried out at any education institute this season so far. He said a four-member committee had been constituted to investigate the issue. He said medical tests of the students are also being conducted.

Around 100 schoolgirls had fainted due to the use of spurious anti-dengue spray in the Domeli area of Jhelum last September.
