"How can you have a player whose performance is not reliable. Afridi's place in the team was over few years back," Miandad said while speaking to a private news channel.
Miandad's statement comes days after Pakistan lost the Asia Cup T20 match against its traditional rival India.
"How you can expect to win or make your cricket better when a player who stopped being a reliable performer some years ago is still playing for the national team as captain?" he questioned.
Miandad said that due to nepotism and favouritism, Pakistan's domestic circuit was not producing quality cricketers. "Pakistan's domestic system may look good on the surface but the reality is otherwise," he upheld.
Holding Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) responsible for the poor state of affairs and questioning its role, the legendary batsman said, "Don't they know what is going on? Don't they notice what is happening to our cricket?"
"The selection committee and the players who don'tperform should be sacked," he added.
"Many Pakistani players lacked cricket sense and did not have an aptitude for the game."
Miandad was of the view that the Pakistan Super League (PSL) had not produced any talent for the national team. "I don’t see any player in the PSL who is so good that he can get a contract in the Big Bash or IPL,” he said.
The former coach of the national team also said that someone like Virat Kohli was successful in at least 70 to 80 per cent of his 100 innings while in contrast Pakistani players were consistent in only 20 to 30 per cent of their 100 innings.
"It is depressing to see Pakistan continuously losing to India," Miandad said while recalling the days when Pakistan used to emerge victorious in most of the matches against arch-rivals.
