Play positive role in promoting tolerance, Rashid advises media

The federal minister inaugurates a 10-KW medium wave transmitter for Radio Pakistan in Karachi

Federal Minister for Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage Pervaiz Rashid stressed upon the media on Monday to spread the message of peace, love and harmony, and discourage haters, extremists and terrorists for promoting tolerance in society.

“The whole country, particularly Karachi, has paid a huge price because of terrorism, therefore, the atmosphere of peace and harmony is required to be promoted in the society,” he said while inaugurating a 10-KW medium wave transmitter for Radio Pakistan in Karachi on Monday.



The transmitter has been installed by the state-owned broadcaster from its own resources at a cost of Rs37 million to improve its transmission.

With the functioning of this transmitter, Radio Pakistan Karachi broadcasts can now be listened to in a radius of 200 kilometres, even in Thatta, Mirpurkhas, Hyderabad, Bhit Shah, Matiri and other adjoining areas.

Work on the installation of a 100KW digital transmitter at Larkana and two short wave transmitters in Karachi's Landhi area is also in final stages.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony, Rashid also praised the role of engineers and administration of the Radio Pakistan for installing the transmitter from its resources.

Earlier, DG Radio Pakistan Saba Raza stressed on the need of harmonising all the broadcasting houses of the state-owned broadcaster in line with the modern technology.



Rashid’s remarks come a day after the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) took notice of a complaint against him for allegedly threatening an anchor of a private TV channel on air.

According to a press statement released by the country's top regulatory authority on Sunday, Dr Shahid Masood had filed a complaint against the federal minister for criticising him and allegedly threatening him during a speech aired on public and private TV channels.
