NEW DELHI/MUMBAI:

A man stabbed 14 members of his own family to death, including seven children, before hanging himself, police said on Sunday.

Hasnin Anwar Warekar, 35, used a butcher’s knife to kill his parents and several of his sisters and their children at the family home shortly after midnight in Thane, about 27km north of Mumbai, police spokesperson Gajanan Kabdule said.

One of Warekar's sisters, who survived the attack, was taken to hospital after neighbours heard her screaming for help. Neighbours were forced to open a window to rescue the woman after the assailant allegedly locked all escape routes from the house before carrying out the attacks, according to local media reports.

"The attacker, Warekar, hanged himself after slitting the throats of all other family members including his parents," Kabdule said. He added that his extended family had gathered at the home late Saturday.
