LAHORE: Rana Zia Abdur Rehman of the Professional Group was elected the Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) president for year of 2015/16 on Saturday. He defeated Ramzan Chaudhry of the Bhoon Group.

Zia got 4,279 votes against Chaudhry’s 3,795.

Sardar Tahir Shahbaz was elected vice-president with 2,065 votes. For secretary, Anas Ghazi was declared successful after polling 3,912 votes. His rival Sharjeel Adnan Sheikh got 3,053 votes. Syed Asad Bukhari was elected finance secretary with 3,721 votes. His rivals Deeba Khan got 2,547 votes and Muhammad Zeeshan Aamir 1,758 votes.

A total of 9,000 lawyers voted to elect the new LHCBA leadership.

For the first time, a biometric system was used for voting. The elections were held at Kiyani Hall of the Lahore High Court Bar Association.

Ghazi is the son of Justice (r) Nazir Ghazi and Sheikh is the son of renowned lawyer Akram Sheikh.

Cameras had been installed to monitor the voting process. No bar member was allowed to enter the venue without a CNIC.

Strict security arrangements had been made with police deployed at all gates of the Lahore High Court.

Rehman said that he would work for the welfare of the lawyers. “I will play my role in strengthening the relationship between the bar and the bench. I believe in the supremacy of law and will continue to uphold it,” he said.
