FAISALABAD:

The City Traffic Police have fined public transporters Rs223,000 in the past two weeks for overcharging commuters.

A spokesperson for the traffic police said on Monday that they had fined owners of 460 vehicles for overcharging commuters. The spokesperson said the traffic police had launched a special drive in the first week of February against transporters – passenger busses, vans and others – found fleecing commuters by demanding fare above the rates notified by the government. He said the rates had dropped after the decrease in price of petroleum, but the traffic police had received several complaints from commuters who claimed they were being overcharged.

The District Transport Authority had notified a revised fare schedule after the announcement of a reduction in petroleum prices. The spokesperson said that several transporters were still charging the old fare schedule.
