Irrigation woes: Sherpao demands completion of canals

It is WSSP’s responsibility to take prompt measures for the timely disposal of the silt

Minister for Irrigation and Social Welfare Sikandar Hayat Khan Sherpao directed relevant authorities to complete work on canals across the province by February 29.


This was stated in a handout issued on Friday. According to the document, the minister issued these directives while inspecting the pace of work on various canals in the city. “Speeding up work on the canals will help ensure timely supply of irrigation water to the crops,” the handout quoted Sherpao as saying.


He also urged Water and Sanitation Services Peshawar (WSSP) to take immediate steps to dispose of the silt extracted from the canals within two to three days. “Silt extracted from the river is lying on the roadsides along the canals,” the document quoted the minister as saying. “It could lead to the spread of various diseases. It is WSSP’s responsibility to take prompt measures for the timely disposal of the silt.
