Kate Winslet wishes to return to her roots by playing an English character in the future

LONDON: After trying her hand at various foreign accents throughout her stupendous career, British actor Kate Winslet has shared she would really like to play an English role now for it would be “the ultimate challenge” for her. Over the years, Winslet has portrayed characters of American, Australian and Polish-Armenian heritage and in her latest film Triple 9, she plays a Russian-Israeli mafia boss.

“My modus operandi is to just keep doing the unexpected. But I do also keep trying to play an English person but that doesn’t keep happening for me at the moment,” Winslet said in an interview. “That would be the ultimate challenge and I’d have no dialect coach at all. No one to have my back; I would be all by myself and probably more terrified than ever before. Wouldn’t that be novel?” she added.



In Triple 9, Winslet plays bejeweled and designer-clad Irina Vlaslov and admitted to feeling “very much out of the comfort zone” throughout. “I don’t know anyone like this woman and I didn’t like her,” she shared. I didn’t empathise with her and wanted that challenge of playing a character who really felt like a character.”

Winslet is currently in the running for an Academy Award, for portraying the late Joanna Hoffman, cofounder of Apple in Steve Jobs. She has previously won an Oscar for The Reader, an Emmy for Mildred Pierce and a Grammy for Listen to the Storyteller. The actor is just a Tony Award away from completing the EGOT acronym, comprising of all four major entertainment honours. When asked if she would be heading to Broadway next, Winslet said, “Well, I suppose it probably would be. And that’s more because of my 12-year-old son, Joe, who is obsessed with records. Since he learnt about this EGOT thing, he’s like ‘Mum, you’ve got to do it’.”



The actor has recently been in the news for publicly backing her Titanic co-star Leonardo DiCaprio, who is also in the running for an Academy Award this year. In fact, both Winslet and DiCaprio have been reuniting on the red carpet throughout the awards season, much to the delight of Titanic fans worldwide.
