Tax Issues: Assistant to PM urges filing returns

MULTAN: Special Assistant to Prime Minister on revenue Haroon Akhtar Khan on Saturday urged non-tax filers to avail an opportunity under the tax amnesty scheme which would surely benefit them. Addressing a seminar arranged jointly by traders and the FBR here, he said nearly one million people out of 180 million in the country were filing tax returns, which was very low. He added that 4.5% people in India used to pay taxes and if Pakistanis paid at the same percentage, then there would be 9 million tax payers in our country. “The government would not have to take foreign loans if nine million people pay taxes,” he said. Khan said the tax-to-GDP ratio of the country was nearly 11% in Pakistan compared to 18% in India so there was a dire need to enhance it. The government would also provide facilities to traders who were already paying taxes.
