Loadshedding continues despite assurances

Express May 03, 2010

KARACHI:

Despite government assurances of a let up in power cuts, loadshedding is becoming more intense in various parts of the country.

Unscheduled power cuts are being reported from Dera Ghazi Khan, Bahawalpur, Vehari and Haroonabad in Southern Punjab. Urban areas are facing upto 16 hours of power cuts while rural areas are without power for more than 18 hours.

The situation is expected to get worse as Multan Electric Power Company is facing a shortfall of more than 800 megawatts.

Apart from daily chores becoming impossible with limited access to electricity, businesses are suffering heavy losses as well.

In the Faisalabad region, industrialists and trade bodies have protested over unscheduled power cuts and have demanded that the government take action against FESCO.
