NEW DELHI:

In a quest for individuality, many in the current crop of Bollywood actors have begun to showcase their hidden – and sometimes, quirky – talents. Interestingly, the younger generation of actors seems to be inclined towards singing. Voicing one’s own songs has been a growing trend for the last couple of years, although Bollywood veterans like Amitabh Bachchan have pioneered it way before. The latest to jump the bandwagon is Parineeti Chopra who will be returning to the silver screen after two whole years in the upcoming film, Meri Pyari Bindu (MPB). The actor will be singing a number for the film, hoping to “explore different aspects” of creativity.

In a telephonic interview with IANS, Chopra explained why so many of her contemporaries have been hitting the recording studios. “I think it’s a coincidence that a lot of the actors who are working right now happen to be passionate singers,” she said. “Obviously, every actor wants to do different things. They don’t just want to act but also explore different sides of their talents.” The 27-year-old starlet credited everyone for welcoming actors who were not confining themselves to acting solely. “It’s really great that the audience, music directors and everyone else in the industry are open to the fact that actors should not just act but also sing,” added Chopra.

Although few know of this, Chopra – who made her acting debut in the 2011 hit, Ladies vs Ricky Bahl – is actually a trained singer and had been waiting for an opportunity to sing for a film. “Everyone around me knows that I sing. I am a trained singer. My directors and music directors would often tell me I should sing but it never happened until now,” she said. “It was just something waiting to happen.”

The bubbly actor is taking after her cousin, Priyanka Chopra, who also sings on a side. She has recently been under media scrutiny on account of her drastic weight loss, from a pant size of 38 to size 30! The announcement of MPB was made via a video on Yash Raj Films’ official Twitter handle. The video showed Chopra singing a song from the forthcoming venture. She will be lending her vocals to a song composed by the duo, Sachin-Jigar, entitled Maana Ki Hum Yaar Nahin. In line with the hot trend, the story of MPB follows an aspiring singer and her love affair with another character, to be played by Ayushmann Khurrana. “My character Bindu is an aspiring singer. The movie is a beautiful love story between her and Ayushmann’s character, set in Kolkata,” revealed Chopra. “It is going to be a beautiful, heart-wrenching love story.” MPB is directed by debutante Akshay Roy and produced by Maneesh Sharma.
