Penalised: 231 shopkeepers fined for profiteering

The crackdown was conducted against traders who were allegedly fleecing their customers

At least 231 shopkeepers were fined for overcharging customers in Hazara district in January, a food department official told The Express Tribune on Tuesday.


According to the official, the shopkeepers were penalised during a series of crackdowns conducted in Mansehra, Torghar, Abbottabad, Battagram, Kohistan and Haripur districts.


Speaking at a news conference in Abbottabad, Food Divisional Director Imtiaz Muhammad Khan said officials of the department visited 836 business outlets as part of the campaign against traders.


The crackdown was conducted against traders who were allegedly fleecing their customers and selling adulterated food items.


“At least 223 shopkeepers were found guilty of overcharging,” he said. “Of these, 80 were fined in Abbottabad, 46 in Mansehra and 63 in Haripur. The remaining 42 shopkeepers were from Battagram, Torghar and Kohistan.”
