Acting VC announced for Gomal University

DI KHAN:

The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa higher education department has announced the acting vice chancellor for Gomal University in DI Khan. The office will be assumed by the former dean of the varsity’s art department, Professor Dr Umar Ali.

The announcement comes at a time when the university remains closed for students.

Safety or corruption?

Although the university administration attributed the closure to security concerns, students have alleged there was no security issue. Many of them believe corruption runs rife in the varsity’s internal affairs. They have demanded classes at the varsity be resumed.



“Students even resorted to protest and kept DI Khan-Multan road blocked for seven hours,” Tribal Students Organisation President Nematullah Wazir told The Express Tribune on Saturday. “They were protesting against the expulsion of fellow students from the hostel of Wensam College and the missing of air conditioners worth millions from the central library.”

He added a crackdown was also started against students. “Two of our students are in jail and an FIR was registered against 200 students at Gomal police station on the complaint of the registrar of the university,” he said.

According to Wazir, the administration was harassing students instead of imparting education to them.

Lobby game

“There are various lobbies active in the varsity, each one trying to bring a vice chancellor of their choice, who could serve ulterior motives instead of managing the university’s affairs,” Shakir Mehsud, a DI Khan based journalist, said. “There are also allegations that merit is violated during new appointments and construction funds are embezzled.”
