KARACHI:

The overlapping of organisations and lack of coordination among them is the city's main problem, according to former Karachi commissioner Shoaib Siddiqui. He was addressing a session on utilities at IBA's Politik 2016 conference on Friday.

To explain his point, Siddiqui said repair work was the responsibility of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and District Metropolitan Corporation. However, the biggest complaint from these organisations surfaced when the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board dug roads without informing them.

"Today, if we plan to dig any space for an underpass or a flyover, we don't even know which utility line is inside," he complained, adding that due to this project costs increase. "We need holistic planning forums in this city," he suggested. Regarding the much delayed Malir 15 Flyover, he said KMC sorted out all the issues to put the project on track but all in vain as the charge of administrator Karachi was taken away from him last year.
