PHF optimistic about women’s hockey
PHF women’s wing feels that recently-concluded National Hockey Championship marked beginning of hockey for females.
KARACHI:
The newly-elected chairperson of the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) women’s wing feels that the recently-concluded 26th National Hockey Championship marked the beginning of hockey for females.
“The tournament was a good opportunity for women all over Pakistan,” Khush Bakht Shujat told The Express Tribune. “Ever since I’ve been elected, I’ve been targeting good national championships. And here is one.”
The Sindh government is also providing jobs and cash prizes for the players that participate in international tournaments. “The girls don’t have any facilities so it’s a historic move.”
Meanwhile, PHF President Qasim Zia also held high hopes for the players and said, “We’re slowly going to promote them and with Shujat in control, I have high hopes from women’s hockey in Pakistan.”
The hockey calendar for the female players includes the Fatima Jinnah Trophy and Benazir Bhutto tournament in March as well as two international matches, one of them which includes a friendly against Holland.
