KARACHI:

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has challenged the amendment by the Sindh government to hold the elections of chairpersons, vice-chairpersons, the mayor, deputy mayors and representatives on reserved seats by a show of hands.

A party leader and lawyer, Barrister Farogh Nasim, sent a legal notice to the Sindh chief minister, chief secretary, and local government secretary, stating that under Article 226 of the Constitution of Pakistan, elections, including local government elections, should be held under secret balloting. Therefore, the MQM has claimed that a show-of-hands procedure for the local government elections is unconstitutional and illegal.
