LAHORE:

A new governor was sworn in for Punjab on Thursday as Sardar Muhammad Latif Khan Khosa took oath at the Governor House in Lahore.

Chief Justice Lahore High Court Ijaz Ahmed Chaudhry administered the oath to the Punjab governor. Khosa is the 33rd Punjab governor since Pakistan gained independence.

Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira and PPP Secretary-General Jehangir Badr, former president Supreme Court Bar Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan, among others attended the ceremony. Aitzaz Ahsan said that no one can fill the place of former governor Salmaan Taseer. He said that Khosa is a competent lawyer and can help bridge differences between the PPP and the PML-N.

The Darbar Hall of the Governor House resounded with slogans of “Naara-e-Bhutto, Jiye Bhutto”, “Zinda hae Bibi Zinda hae.” PPP’s Information Secretary Fauzia Wahab tried to stop workers from chanting slogans and calm them down.

The position of governor
fell vacant after the assassination of the last incumbent Salmaan Taseer.

Later Khosa addressed Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP)’s party workers and said that Benazir Bhutto’s vision would guide him in his work.

Earlier, Fauzia Wahab after attending Qul of parents of Supreme Court Judge Justice Javed Iqbal lashed out at the Punjab government and said it had failed to provide security to people despite spending Rs8 billion on the police force.
