Pass on powers to LG representatives

Letter January 21, 2016
PPP must pass on the much-needed powers of governance to the elected representatives of Karachi

KARACHI: The PPP, which claims at every chance that it is the flag-bearer of democracy in the country, first hindered the holding of local government elections in Sindh, and now it is hindering the transfer of power to the elected representatives for this most essential of democratic institutions.

Karachi, in particular, has seen its infrastructure and culture decline under the archaic bureaucratic model of governance, under which the administrators are answerable not to the public, but only to the provincial government. Since the PPP government has no electoral presence in the city, it seems to show little or no interest in resolving its issues. The PPP should end this hypocritical stance on democracy and pass on the much-needed powers of governance to the elected representatives of the city.
