ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) has recommended imposition of Rs1 million fine on Samaa TV for airing an indecent programme.
On July 22, 2015, Samaa TV in its programme, “Wardaat”, had aired reenactment of a crime story in which a vulgar text message, from a boy to girl, was shown in its original form. It was not only in negation of our culture, customs and religious values but also a violation of Pemra rules and code of conduct imposed by the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
The case was referred to the Council of Complaints, Karachi, after no response from Samaa TV management. The Council of Complaints held its meeting on January 14, 2016, and after seeking the viewpoint of the TV channel and watching the recording of the programme has recommended imposition of Rs1m.
The council also directed that license of Samaa TV be suspended in case of future violations and directed the circular be issued to all TV channels to show restraint while showing programmes on crimes. The case will be presented in the next meeting of Pemra for the implementation of the fine.
