Fatal collision: Five of a family killed in road crash

KARACHI: Five members of a family lost their lives in a road mishap on Link Road on the outskirts of the city on Monday. The victims were travelling in a rickshaw when the accident took place in the early hours of Monday. A speeding dumper hit the rickshaw near Gulshan-e-Hadeed within the limits of Steel Town police.

Following the accident, the victims were shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for autopsies and medical treatment. Doctors at JPMC said the two bodies were brought to the hospital, while three died during treatment. Three others are still receiving treatment at the hospital.

The driver and the cleaner of the dumper escaped before the police arrived at the accident site. The police have started investigations to trace and arrest the driver and cleaner responsible for the accident.

The victims who lost their lives include five-year-old Sohail, 12-year-old Suleman, 22-year-old Mehnaz, Irfan, 32, and Taj Muhammad, 36. The injured included six-year-old Mubassir, Zohra Bibi, 45, and one-year-old Mehwish. Their bodies were handed over to their families after medico-legal formalities were completed at the hospital. The family hailed from Punjab and their bodies were sent to their hometown, Tehsil Ahmadpur East, for burial.

The injured victims told the police that they were on their way to the Super Highway from Steel Town when a speeding dumper hit their rickshaw in an attempt to overtake them. Steel Town SHO Ghulam Ahmed said that a case has been registered over the accident and the police was looking for the driver.
