Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi now has more followers than Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan, making him the second most followed Indian on Twitter.

His following of 17.4 million stands close to Amitabh Bachan, who has 18.9 million followers. Shah Rukh Khan takes the third spot with his 17,351,100 followers.

This also makes Modi the most followed Indian politician in Indian history, and the second most followed politician in the world, falling right behind United States President Barack Obama.

Statistics reveal Modi’s following has consistently increased by about a million every two months. His account, @narendramodi, crossed the 15 million mark on September 22 last year and on November 20 his following reached 16 million.

Joining Twitter in 2009, Modi has used his account for many developmental projects like Make In India, Swach Bharat, Mann Ki Baat and Selfie With Daughter, in an attempt to reach and connect with Indian citizens.
