Shershah bridge collapse

Shershah bridge collapse

KARACHI: This is with reference to a report in your paper of April 29 which said that the bail of those accused in the Shershah bridge collapse was extended. The sorry fact is that since the NHA is involved in this project, those responsible for the collapse are unlikely to be punished.

Perhaps this has to do with the fact that the military manages the NHA and we all know that in this country there is a different law for civilians and quite another for military officials.

You will be surprised to know that they are awarded contracts that are lucratively higher in cost than what the market demands. A history of contract awarded to NLC and FWO by NHA will speack volumes if Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan find some time to just thumb through the history of contracts awarded to these two military owned organizations. If you look at the incident of 1-9-2007, you will see that Chairman of NHA was a General. The Contractor - NLC - is a military outfit NLC headed by a General. The Commission or Committee that probed the incident had a Chairman and he was, guess what, a General. The designer - ECIL - is a private company (according to their website www.ecil.com). I dont know if they have a General in their midst or not becuase if they dont they are the most likely scapegoat that is to be blamed for the whole thing. I guess this is a lesson for Pakistani business community to learn lessons for working in this Country we all call "Land of the Pure".
