The apprehensions of Urban Resource Centre joint director are based on misconceptions about the DCK master plan

KARACHI: This is apropos to the news item, “Urban dilemma: ‘DHA City’s failure to account for maids will lead to katchi abadis’” in this newspaper on January 9. The news feature is based on the statement of a joint director of the Urban Resource Centre, alleging that no space has been planned for drivers, housemaids and other domestic staff of the residents in the upcoming DHA City Karachi (DCK) project, which will lead to the development of new katchi abadis there. The apprehensions of the joint director are based on misconceptions, misunderstanding and a total lack of knowledge about the DCK master plan. As such, they are misleading.

DCK has been imaginatively and innovatively planned on international standards and comprehensively caters to all aspects of futuristic requirements and emerging needs. Some 30 per cent of the area of DCK has been kept for low-cost housing projects — plots of 100, 150 and 200 yards. There are also two goths (villages) located inside DCK and moreover, the New Malir Housing Scheme for low-cost housing is coming up in the vicinity of DCK. Collectively, these places will amply cater to the housing needs of the domestic staff and low-paid house staff, and as such, there is no possibility of development of any new katchi abadis in the area. DHA is a leading housing authority of the country with a progressive outlook. Attributing generalised statements without knowledge and research is uncalled for.
