RIO DE JANEIRO: A Brazilian model who was a finalist in a national beauty contest died of a heart attack hours after undergoing a cosmetic procedure to remove wrinkles, the pageant said Thursday.

Raquel dos Santos, 28, died Monday in a suburb of Rio de Janeiro after receiving an acid injection in her face from a doctor who did not specialize in cosmetic surgery, Brazilian media reports said.

Uptick in cosmetic surgeries linked to social media

Her husband said that shortly after the procedure, she complained of an accelerated heart rate and shortness of breath, said a statement from the Muse of Brazil pageant, in which Dos Santos competed as a finalist last year.

The doctor, Wagner Moraes, denied responsibility for her death, telling newspaper O Globo that Dos Santos was a "ticking time bomb" because she was taking an anabolic steroid designed for horses and was a chain smoker.

"She lied, she denied it. She didn't mention her use of this veterinary medication. She had a ticking time bomb in her body and I didn't know it," said Moraes.

Despite not having a cosmetic surgery license, he said, "in the past two years I've performed this procedure on 2,000 women and there's never been a problem, it has only made them more beautiful."

The procedure involves injecting the patient with one milliliter of hyaluronic acid, a substance that naturally occurs in the human body and plays a role in skin repair.

Dos Santos, who had two children aged seven and 13, was the contestant for Mato Grosso state in the 2015 Muse of Brazil pageant.

Organizers said they were "deeply saddened" by her death.

Cosmetic surgery and teenagers – a disaster waiting to happen

"Her dream was interrupted. She was excited about everything and happy to reach the pageant final. Like us, all the contestants are in shock," it said.

Brazil has the second highest number of cosmetic surgical operations per year after the United States -- more than 700,000 in 2014, according to the Brazilian Plastic Surgery Society.

Iqbal Hadi Zaidi | 8 years ago | Reply Beauty vs Life! What to say and what not to say as I am facing extremely and very typical mind boggling situation after reading that a beauty queen lost her life as she went into surgical procedure to turn still the more beautiful so that she wins the title in the next beauty contest. The news is about 28 years old thrilling Brazilian lady beauty contestant who had recently participated in beauty contest called Muse of Brazil 2015 and had decided that if not to day then tomorrow she wants to be crowned at the next beauty contest and therefore she consulted a doctor for undergoing some cosmetic surgical procedure to get removed some wrinkles she had which could either disqualify her to contest or she may be ignored at the contest. Therefore, she had been operated upon in Rio De Janerio but as the bad luck had it after the operation she confronted so many life threatening complications that eventually she could not survive and died leaving her 2 children aged seven and thirteen years. Who will look after her so young children who definitely need mother to look them after needs an answer? Instead of being declared as winner in the next beauty contest she lost her life instead. Craze to be called the most beautiful led her to such a tragic death which is most shocking and regrettable to be honest but done is done which cannot be undone whatsoever. Never ever risk life which one gets one time only and hence the prudence demands that none whether male or female should endanger his / her life unnecessarily otherwise the result could be as fatal as what is experienced by Raquel dos Santos.
