Squash: Zaman upsets better-ranked opponent

KARACHI:

Pakistan’s Farhan Zaman caused a major upset in the first qualifying round of the JP Morgan Tournament of Champions as he stunned world number 39 Paul Coll with a 3-0 win in New York, US.

Zaman kept edging his opponent and took all three frames with close margins as he won 11-9, 11-8, 12-10.

The world number 68 was understandably delighted with the victory and hoped that he would progress into the main round. “It’s certainly important to win against a better-ranked player,” Zaman, who next faces England’s Declan James for a place in the main round, told The Express Tribune.

Meanwhile, compatriot Nasir Iqbal also progressed to the final qualifying round after beating Guyana’s Sunny Seth 3-1 and setting up a date with Scotland’s Alan Clyne.

Iqbal won by overall scores of 11-3, 12-14, 11-4 and 11-1 as his superior fitness carried the day.
